If you have never been on a cruise here are some common answers for
cruises and these specific ships in general.
Will I get sick? I myself am very prone to motion sickness and only went on my first cruise because my partner got a free cruise through work. I was really surprised that I had no trouble at all and enjoyed it very much. When you consider how big these ships are and the average wave is two feet their is really not much motion at all on the ship. Even when we went through a storm on our last return trip the waves were only about four feet and the ship still was very stable. Still, some people do feel a little icky and if you do they have a patch they put behind your ear which I am told by the few people who did need one that it took care of them the whole trip nicely.
Will I only get spicy food? I was worried about this as well being a sports enthusiast with a rigid diet but was very surprised that their was a huge selection of meat and potatoes plain meals if you want them as well. In fact, I ate about every two hours (you eat alot on these ships) and every meal was fantastic and healthy!
Example, morning I had vegetable omelette with yogurt, fresh fruit and plain turkey meat.
lunch I would have a fantastic turkey in home made roll grilled in front of you with fruit and sides
dinner I would get chicken breast with lemon butter, vegetable medley, mashed taters and all through the day assorted snack meals as they serve 24 hours.
NEW CRUISE APP! We highly recommend this cruise app if you cruise more than one time a year
Go to http://shipmatetravel.com and download the free app. We also recommend getting one of these SHIPFACED door mounts to put on your door, it really helps find your room when your walking down a corridor with hundreds of doors.
Will I get fat with all this food? I really thought I would come home 10 pounds heavier but was shocked to find I had lost two pounds upon getting home! Seriously, I eat non stop every two hours day after day on these trips and the only thing I can figure is you do alot of walking around the ship and even though they have elevators you tend to go up or down two flights of stairs all the time instead of waiting for an elevator so it seems you get more exercise than you think.
What if I feel stuck on the ship? Again, my concern as well the first time I went but it really surprised me how many times I forgot I am on a ship. It is SO big (10 stories tall) and has a full size casino, tons of eateries, putput golf, theatres, arcade with life size duck shooting games, 6 foot tall video games that even adults are mesmerized with and wifi all through ship to keep you current with internet happenings. Tons more to list here but you really are sooooo busy with activities and fun stuff that you dont even remember your on a ship let alone time to think about how you miss shore.
Experience The Days of Old. The other cool thing about cruising these ships is it provides a great way to experience what sailors have experienced for hundreds of years. Even though these ships are state of the art you still see the iron skeleton of the ship especially walking outside along the deck you see, feel and smell exactly the same thing someone would have experienced in that same spot 100 years ago. The skeleton of the ship is still roughly the same, the bulkheads, the wood deck, the oil on the hoists, the raw steel beams looping overhead. The only difference is what folks are wearing but other than that you are transported back in time. Of course if you want to come back to the 21st century simply walk back inside and there you are in modern Vegas or Broadway.
What About Safety in Mexico? This part of Mexico is featured many times each week on shows like HGTV and Merida which is featured the most is about 50 miles north of Progresso and is one of the biggest internet hubs in the world and US and Canadian citizens are moving their in droves because of beauty, safety and getting the best bang for your buck. Keep in mind the farther south you go in Mexico the more safer it is and with 5 dialect regions to pass through (each getting safer due to dialects making bad guys stand out) Progresso is the farthest south so it is exremely safe. Actually I felt much safer walking the streets of Progresso than my home town in the USA. Another surprise was when we took an excursion trip many miles inland to remote beaches you would see a couple american girls every few miles on remote beaches by themself laying next to their moped on the beach. You really get the feeling this place is safe if a couple 19 year old girls are seen every few miles with no one else around on lonely secluded beaches.
Like Massage? Well you are in for a treat! and were not talking about the on ship massage although that is good it does not compare to massage on the beach under a tent. But its not just a good massage it is a FANTASTIC massage and it gets even better, just $10 for each half hour!!! We found all the tent girls give great massages in Progresso but sadly we have not yet found a comperable quality massage or bargain in Cozumel beach tents. Most of their prices are US based and the massage is only half as good as the deep tissue you get in Progresso. A word of advice, some guys assume because they are in Mexico and getting massage that they will be getting more more than just massage. If you are under a tent on a beach and getting a massage it is disrespectfull to both Mexico and the ladies to ask them if you can get jacked off. Please do not embarass yourself or us fellow americans, we actually hear some people ask such nonsense and they are politely asked to leave by management. Just like in America most massage is just massage. If however your looking for more you can find it if you look hard enough but a nice canopy on the beach with tourists a few feet away is not the place.
How Much is the Cruise in the end... Really??? If your thinking $330 sounds too good to be true well its not. As long as you dont gamble, drink alcohol or take too many excursions you can expect to finish your trip with exactly the amount of cash in your pocket you started. On average if you spend $30 for the unlimited soda card and take 1 excursion (with 4 hours layover you only have time for 1 per port anyway) and each costing $90 per excursion you can expect to spend $210 in addition to the cost of your ship ticket. But most people do not go on excursions and choose instead to just walk the beach and lay under cabanas. Their is no charge for leaving the ship and visiting the port or beaches near the ship.
What are Excursions? These are specialized trips ran by locals and you can pre buy them on board or wait till you get off at port. Some sell out so its best to buy them on the ship such as the horse riding trip through jungle ruins in Cozumel. The horses are healthy and well behaved and they take you through a fantastic portion of jungle on a private huge ranch with caves and Mayan ruins. This is the real deal if you want to experience backwoods Mayan jungles and ruins not seen by many tourists. The ranch is many generations of horsemen and you will feel very safe knowing your surrounded for miles and miles on a working horse ranch with old world Vaqueros (cowboys), which was mutated into Buckaroo in the early days of the wild west. They give you lots of history about Mayan history and tradition along the 1.5 hour ride but it actually passes by very quickly and my friends who are not horse folks did not get sore and thought the ride was extremely pleasant and educational for the $90 fee.
Another trip well worth the $90 fee in Cozumel is the ride to the island where the Corona commercial was shot. You actually get to lay under an umbrella in the exact same spot as the commercial with water lapping at your feet with a bucket of Coronas by your side or favorite drink. If you pan left or right in the commercial you would essentially see the same umbrella and chair around the island with other folks who paid for the excursion to experience with you but its still just you and a handfull of others on the beach at any one time. They also provide a buffet with great free food while your there. However, the island is only part of the fun. You can choose either a fast cigar boat ride to the island or a relaxing catamaran. The cigar boat straps you in like a roller coaster and it feels similar with 360 spins at 60 miles per hour and water splashing you at every turn.
If your worried about who is taking you on an excursion any concerns will fade when you first experience one of these at port. The attendants all have the look and feel of Disney World right down to the uniform, maintained equipement and professional safety briefings but you experience the real world and not a ride made to mimic the adventure.
Do I need To Bring Water on the Cruise Ship? You are allowed to bring 12 sodas or 12 waters in your carry on but many people bring two bags with 12 sodas in one and 48 waters in the other. Worst case they will remove the extra waters not allowed but most people are allowed to bring what they have in their bags. I am not too worried about bringing water anymore since the water on board is filtered and has never bothered me at all. It tastes as fresh as bottle water. I only drink bottle water at home and even so cruise line water does not give me any ill affects.
How is the Gym on Board? They have an amazing gym on board and actually have free weights up to 70 pound dumbells. If you want a good bench press workout they have Nautilus equipment with heavy weights to mimic bench pressing along with the usual pec decks and other machines you find at fine gyms you can maintain a decent gym workout routine while on board. Tricep extension machine, leg machine, calf machine etc plus a row of tradmills looking straight out ahead where you would normally think the bridge should be located. The best view on the ship is in the gym!
Finally, Why Go With GlobalFight? We do this same trip every few months for modeling shoots and as such know the ship and islands inside and out. If it is your first time on a cruise or this route were glad to help you learn the ship and cool spots on the island. If you have done this route before you might be surprised at the new exciting things you did not know were available. It is also nice to cruise with a large group and seeing familiar faces as you go from place to place on the ship and meeting friends in the passage ways, elevators and learning what new adventures they uncovered that you had not known about earlier. I have friends who have done this cruise over 10 times and we still can point out something the other had not known about the islands or cruise to try on the next. Cruises are all about meeting new friends and we especially like meeting GlobalFight friends on these trips. See you soon!
